In the autumn of 1996, Läther (pronounced "Leather"), an orchestral progrock album created by the legendary Frank Zappa was brought into the world. It was released posthumously through the label Rykodisc as a three-CD set and Zappa explained that the name was a joke, based on "common bastardized pronunciation of Germanic syllables by the Swiss."

Now, I'm not going to go into the history of the album -- that's not what this page is for. This is an archive of a quiz made back in '96 that, while you can still play, you cannot submit your answers... making the whole thing defunct.
Let it be known that I'm a casual Zappa fan. As of writing, I've only listened to a handful of albums and Läther is not one of them. As you'll notice as you take this quiz, these are not questions for the casual fan. Therefore, I had to do... a lot of research for this quiz. If I've gotten an answer wrong, feel free to bug me here.

NAUGAHYDE CORINTHIAN CALFSKIN

The following is a direct excerpt from zappa.com. The links will redirect you to each respective quiz level.

Here’s how it works:
There are three rounds: Naugahyde, Corinthian, and Calfskin. Select a level to begin. You can play any or all of the three, but you’ll have an easier time if you start at the lowest level (Naugahyde) and proceed to the top (Calfskin). On Halloween, we drew our winners from the pool of the top-graded entrants at each level.
Level Prize # of Winners
Naugahyde A CD copy of Läther five
Corinthian A CD copy of Läther
A copy of the December 1994 issue of Goldmine magazine featuring an exhaustive look at FZ's history and discography
four
Calfskin A CD copy of Läther
A paperback copy of Ben Watson's FZ exegesis/deconstruction/semiotic tract (i.e. book) The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play, courtesy of St. Martin's Griffin
three

It's unfortunately too late for a chance at the prizes, but we do encourage you to take the test for fun.
